What the demos record

Anonymous numbers about how the stream played, so we can make it better. Nothing that says who you are.

What we record

While you watch or play, the page sends a short summary of how the stream behaved, every 30 seconds and when you leave:

WhatFor example
Behind liveHow far the picture you see is from the moment it was captured
Frame timingHow evenly frames arrive and are shown
Stalls and freezesHow many, and how long
SoundGlitches and what kind they were (the sound ran out, skipped, or a packet came late or never came), and how far sound and picture drift apart
Playback pathWhether your device decodes in hardware, and how the picture is drawn
Browser and systemBrowser and major version, operating system, phone, tablet or computer, screen refresh rate
Rough regionCountry, or state in the US, worked out from your connection when the numbers arrive
SessionWhich demo, which version of the player, and how long you stayed

What we never record

  • Your IP address. It is used only to look up the region as the numbers arrive, then dropped. It is never written down.
  • Cookies or an ID for these numbers. Each visit's numbers stand alone; nothing links one visit to the next.
  • Fingerprinting. We do not combine details about your device to tell you apart from other people.
  • Your name or chat. Stream numbers are kept apart from anything you type.

How long we keep it

Each visit's numbers are deleted after 30 days. What stays after that are totals, such as the typical delay per browser or region, which cannot be traced to a visit.

On demos with chat, names and messages are also deleted after 30 days. The name shown is the display name you enter: we never ask for your real name to watch, play or chat, so use one only if you want to. Everything on a demo is public: your name, your chat and what you do while driving can be seen by everyone there. The demos use a random ID kept in your browser, for your turn, your name and chat moderation. It is never attached to these numbers.

Your choice

You can stop sending these numbers at any time. Your choice is kept in this browser only. If your browser sends Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track, nothing is sent and you do not need to do anything.
